Posted on(NOT) Another World War II Shooter Doesn’t this all look familiar?I’m sure you’ve heard this before. The Second World War seems to be the favorite child for many game developers, with dozens of titles that take place between those turbulent years. While many of us believe that the idea of taking the fight to the Nazi’s/Japanese/(and sometimes even the Italians) has been done to death, I believe that some WW2 titles have enough life to take them out of the seemingly-dead-end cliche’. This is why I wanted to bring to your attention a name you may or may not be familiar with: Heroes and Generals, and I want to take some time to explain why this is not another Call of Duty/Medal of Honor clone. General ConceptHeroes and Generals is a Multiplayer First Person Shooter that follows the Free to Play model. Battles are fought over points of territory represented by a map of Western Europe. The magic of the game happens when we start connecting these points together and building a general picture of the war.

This map basically represents battle lines that are always changing as a result of the players actions in the game. The game currently has two playable factions you may join: USA and Germany. Both sides are trying to eliminate their enemy off the face of Western Europe, and they do this through a series of large-scale FPS battles over control of strategic points. Strategic points are captured by Assault Groups (groups of players, similar to Guilds/Clans) being ordered to move into an area. Battles are generated when two Assault Groups of the opposing factions collide in the same strategic point.High ranking players, known as Generals, command Assault Groups to move into these points and to challenge enemy assault groups.

If they're going to stick to the 3 factions per continent then for asia it should be Japan,China and US(UK faction will replace them in europe).

Generals can also redirect other assault groups into an ongoing battle in order to provide their team with additional resources (such as respawns) in-game, which can certainly affect the tide of war. What this does, in combination with the other concepts described above, is recreates the events of the Second World War as dictated by its players, not a pre-defined script. These battle lines are always changing depending on player performanceGameplayThe bulk of gameplay is First Person Shooter element. It handles like a traditional FPS and was designed to appeal to a wide audience. There are not too many ‘hardcore’ elements to the game, which encourages players who are not familiar with the genre to become acquainted rather comfortably. The most noticable feature that is implemented in combat is the mechanic known as ‘ Bullet Drop’, which represents a bullets gradual fall to Earth as it travels along its path. This is easily compensated for by adjusting your weapons sights, and can be done rather quickly with the use of your middle mouse wheel.

While this mechanic alone isn’t ground breaking, it does make players work harder for their kills. This is your map, use it well. The maps themselves are large and well detailed. As far as I could tell, the majority of all buildings in the game were enter-able one way or another, giving player a variety of paths to clear through crowded city streets. Open maps such as farm lands and woods also provided a large play space for units of players to attempt to flank their enemies. Most maps I’ve been able to play so far are very open to all players, so don’t worry about being bottle-necked into too tight of a spot by more experienced players, as a lot of flanking so long as your familiar with your handy-dandy map.Similar to the Battlefield franchise, there are vehicles (and aircraft!) added into the battles.

The inclusion (or exclusion) is totally dependent on the type of Assault Groups that are participating in the battle. This means Armored Assault Groups would have access to Tanks/Armored vehicles/etc while an exclusively Infantry Group would have access to no vehicles what so ever. (more on Assault Groups later). Vehicular combat is smooth, but there are certainly some elements that could be optimized.

Some issues include the jerkiness of a vehicle in response to a drivers commands, or the inability to utilize your vehicles weapons effectively due to vehicle lag. It should be noted, Assault Groups that go into battle with an Airborne/Luftwaffe element assigned to them will have player-controlled aircraft available for that particular battle. Haven’t gotten to try out aerial combat yet, but it does affect the fighting on the ground! The battles themselves are normally a series of take-and-hold matches that has both teams assigned a certain number of respawns (to represent general numeric strength for the Assault Groups involved). Depending on the team that is attacking the control point, attackers will be responsible for securing a certain number of objectives while defenders will try to keep them off the point at all cost. Games are won by either achieving all objectives or simply eliminating the entire enemy team.

This is easier said than done, as players can request reinforcement from their Generals, who will send other Assault Groups into the area and bolster their teams number of respawns in real-time (as well as possibly providing them with armored/air support).Sometimes, certain games can feel a little stacked in terms of players (meaning that one side will be dramatically outnumbered), and this is done intentionally. The game eschews an auto-balancing feature in order to simulate the advantage a team can have in terms of sheer numbers. This means that if the Americans have decided to pour 50+ players in attacking a town that only 10 German players are defending, the German commander would do well to divert all available resources to the defense of that area. While some players on the receiving end might find this a frustrating mechanic to work with, it is done to create an immersive WW2 experience (nothing like a good last stand).

Ride into war with one of the light mechanized divisionsOne last thing, the visuals for the game are quite nice (especially for a free to play). The Retox engine (which has been constructed from scratch) beautifully renders the Western European theater with just enough grittiness to remind you that you’re in the largest human conflict fought on Earth, without resorting to all-brown filters. The engine itself is optimized to run on many mid-end PCs, so those with low-end PCs might be able to take a crack at the game on its lower settings, while those with mid-to-high ends can try for maxing out their settings. Features included with this engine include depth of field, anti-aliasing, unit occlusion (all the Dx11 goodies). Or one of the Heavy ones. Character CustomizationNo matter which faction you join, your character always starts off as a general infantryman. You get a very basic load out that features a rifle and little else.

As you participate in battles, you earn both an increase in rank (through experience) and an in-game currency known as credits. You use these credits in order to purchase new weapons and kit for your soldier. Alternatively, you can also spend some of your real money to purchase Gold in order to purchase those upgrades. So far, players who are using the default equipment seem to be faring just as fine as those who have upgraded to other weapons, the only difference being the play-style. However, having a player assigned to using a Heavy Machine Gun might assist other standard Riflemen in pinning down an opposing team long enough for your assault team of submachine gunners to sweep up. There is also the ability to display a combat badge of your choosing on your model, though this seems to be entirely aesthetic (badges are earned through in-battle achievements). You can also form your own Assault groups to contribute to your teams war effort if you have enough credits to form it.

As your Assault Group fights on, you can spend more credits to upgrade it from a standard infantry group to a motorized group/armored group/airborne group/etc. I appreciate this feature in the sense that it gives you and your friends the ability to make a permanent combat unit for the duration of the war, and to develop both a reputation for your play styles and provide an actual benefit in battles. One word of warning to players who wish to play with other friends: Once you create a soldier and choose a side, that soldier is locked to that faction until the war ends (one side has been completely wiped out). You can create soldiers on both sides (using the same parent account), but your purchased upgrades will not be transferred (at least, as far as I could tell). TL;DR (Final Thoughts) 7/10 Bring friends to play with you!ProsConsIncredibly Immersive multiplayer shooterPlayer base still has a lot of room for growthCasual, easy-to-pickup.

Friendly to players unfamiliar with the WWII genreMight not be as ‘hardcore’ as some WWII gamers might enjoyFree to play model makes game accessible to a wide audienceReal money can be used to purchase new weapons that may give wallet warriors an edgeThe game is currently in its beta, and the work that has been put in has been terrific to say the least. The list of features they wish to include and improve upon leave this game with plenty of potential. Here’s what I say: If you want to give a World War 2 multiplayer shooter a go, give Heroes and Generals a try.
